Girl Scouts Day - Engineers Week 2018

For this year’s Engineers Week 2018, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Los Angeles Younger Members Forum (LA YMF) added a new event, Girl Scouts Day!

ASCE LA YMF, California State University - Northridge (CSUN), and the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles (GSGLA) teamed up for Girl Scouts Day! On Saturday, February 24, 2018, approximately 100 Girl Scouts participated in a day that included a CSUN campus tour and a series of hands-on activities titled “Think Like An Engineer”. The hands-on activities included three design challenges; the helping hand, pop fly, and a water collection device. The girl scouts were split into three groups and rotated so they can try and develop each device being a mechanical hand or scoop, a catapult, and a drainage plan. The engineer volunteers really enjoyed mentoring the girl scouts through each of the activities and bonded over engineering! Each group included student engineers and working professional engineers to help guide the Girl Scouts in their design challenge. Girl Scouts Day was a great day for inspiring future generations of female engineers!

The parents also participated by attending an Engineering Panel that also included a mix of student engineers and working professional engineers. The parents really enjoyed and appreciated the opportunity to ask the panel various questions related to college planning, career guidance, encouragement, and more! The day was fun for all that participated and ASCE LA YMF can't wait to hold another Girl Scouts Day at next year's Engineers Week!

Thank you to LABOE for sponsoring Girl Scouts Day!
