The Le Val Lund Lecture and Student Symposium on Lifeline Infrastructure and Community Resilience intends to (1) promote interaction between engineering professionals, community leaders and organizations, educational and research institutions, and students, with a general focus around lifeline systems, and (2) improve lifeline infrastructure resilience to support resilient communities.

Bilal M. Ayyub, PhD, PE, Dist.M.ASCE, Hon.M.ASME, F.SEI, F.SNAME, F.SRA is our 2019 ASCE Le Val Lund Award for Practicing Lifeline Risk Reduction recipient.
Dr. Ayyub is a University of Maryland Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His main research interests are risk, resilience, uncertainty, decisions, and systems applied to civil, mechanical, infrastructure, energy, defense and maritime fields. Dr. Ayyub is a distinguished member of ASCE, an honorary member of ASME, and a fellow of SEI, SRA and SNAME. He completed projects for governmental and private entities. He is the recipient of several awards and research prizes from ASCE, ASNE, ASME, ENR, the Department of the Army, etc. He has authored and co-authored more than 650 publications including 8 textbooks and more than 15 edited books. He is also the founding Editor-in-Chief of the ASCE-ASME Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems. His most recent edited book on Climate-Resilient Infrastructure co-authored by members of the ASCE Committee on Adaptation to a Changing Climate was selected as an ENR Newsmaker in 2017.
The LeVal Lund Award for Practicing Lifeline Risk Reduction recognizes an individual for contributions to the practice of reducing risks to lifeline systems and preparing communities for natural and manmade hazards.
In his talk, Bilal M. Ayyub will give an overview of the driving forces and hazards associated with a changing climate, followed by methods for estimation of extreme events particularly related to precipitation and flooding and adaptive design within an adaptive risk management framework in the context of life-cycle engineering and economics.
