Community Services"MLAB YMF is on the Community Service Wagon!" MLAB YMF Revlon Walk/Run for Women On May 12, 2007, a group of YMF members and friends woke up early morning and headed out to the L.A. Coliseum to be part of the 14th Annual Revlon Walk 5K. The Revlon Walk helps raise funds and awareness in the fight against women's cancer. There was thousand of participates running or walking from all different ages. Each participant was presented with a gold medal on a red ribbon that volunteer firemen/women placed around our necks, just like real winners. After the 5K, we all got lunch and laid back on the grass and listen to Pat Benatar and her band. The event was repeated May 3, 2008, in another great effort to raise funds and awareness for women with breast cancer. Los Angeles Food Bank - Food Drive and Volunteering Hearing of local shortages among Los Angeles' food banks, MLAB YMF leapt into action and from March 17th to March 28th of 2008, MLAB YMF held a food drive to assist the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank. The efforts helped fill an astonishing two barrels with nonperishable items and helped the food bank in their mission to mobilize resources to fight hunger in our community. Coinciding, MLAB YMF organized the opportunity for members to attend on March 22, 2008, and to assist in sorting and preparing food to be delivered to needing families. On October 13, 2007, three members of MLAB YMF went to Sony Picture Studios to be part a large fundraising event. Between videogame options ranging from Nintendo's Wii to Pac man to Guitar Hero, an open bar and food from favorites like Yamashiro and Tito's Tacos, and all for a good cause to raising funds for our community. Our participation will help train leaders to impact our community through services and outreach programs for women and kids in the Los Angeles Community. On September 15, 2007, MLAB YMF was part of the largest volunteer day on the planet. Over 90 nations participated in the Coastal Cleanup Day presented by Heal the Bay. We got our comfortable shoes and sunscreen and went out to the Santa Monica Beaches and started cleaning. There were other groups and all ages participating helping clean up our beaches. It was a great day to make our planet clean. Wattles FarmMLAB YMF has lent their hand twice thus far to the 4.2 acre community garden located in the heart of Hollywood which has been deemed a preservation site for the City of Los Angeles. On both occasions of January 21, and November 18, 2007, more than 20 members of ASCE, local colleges, and guest came out to assist the park in tasks to help maintain the perimeter, clear the avocado groves, prune the vegetation, and much more. The terrific work accomplished by the volunteers is still talked about today in Wattles Farm and is greatly appreciated by the garden's members and local community. Frontline OutreachAt the ASCE National Conference MLAB YMF carried out the tradition of staying an extra day and volunteered with the Frontline Outreach in Orlando, Florida. Our group of about 16 people helped serve the urban youth and their families by assisting with landscaping, enclosing of the dumpster, repainting the striping in the parking lot and in the gym. The generosity and dedication of our volunteers aided Frontline in their success to prepare tomorrow's leaders and with their vision of success and service. |
