LA YMF is excited to ring in the 2012 year and bring our members new programs and events for our ASCE members. Over the last few months, our Board was busy putting their skills to work and organizing great events to end the 2011 year and preparing for the New Year.
The first quarter of our 2011-2012 season had a great start with a busy October: attending the ASCE National Conference in Memphis, LA Section Installation Luncheon at Disneyland Hotel, and MLAB Banquet at the Los Angeles City Hall. November kicked off with an exhilarating YMF Soccer Tournament in Whittier Narrows Park with over 50 YMF soccer players from Los Angeles, San Bernardino/Riverside, San Diego, and Orange County with LA YMF’s Green Team taking home the trophy! Our Social and Sports Committees have been amazing at bringing engineers together over different activities such as rock climbing and monthly Happy Hours, and are working with neighboring YMF groups to plan for our annual Mammoth Trip in the end of January. Our holiday season started with volunteering at the Pasadena Union Station Homeless Services on Thanksgiving, in addition to a successful Holiday Network Night, and Toy Drive at the Edison in downtown, where over 40 members mingled over a holiday Icebreaker game, food, and drinks.
The LA YMF University Outreach Committee has conducted resume workshops helping college students refine their resumes and job interview skills; they hosted a student mixer, which gathered ASCE student leaders from UCLA, USC, CSULA, CSUN, and LMU to discuss and share their successes and obstacles. Also, our K-12 Outreach Committee has been continuing its success in connecting with local schools and building relations with other education programs. As well, outreaching to the community at education fairs and presenting at classrooms on the importance of Civil Engineering!
The 2012 Year will be no less eventful as the last. LA YMF has several local tours such as the Pasadena City Hall and the Los Angeles First Street Bridge tours in January, as well as our San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Technical Presentation on Tuesday, January 31st. Bring your friends and colleagues to the annual YMF Mammoth Trip on January 27-29th, Bowling Night on January 26th, and/or join our Community Service or K-12 Outreach committees. I encourage you to invite your company to our 13th Annual Student Night Job Fair on Friday, March 9th in Downtown LA, a fantastic network night for company representatives and students alike. As always, check the LA YMF calendar at www.mlab-ymf.org and our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/asce.losangeles.ymf. Looking forward to seeing you at our next event!
Sincerely,
Jinny Huang, P.E.
Los Angeles YMF President

Reading to Kids (RTK) is dedicated to inspiring underserved children with a love of reading. They coordinate reading clubs at elementary schools in downtown Los Angeles where volunteers read aloud to children and create arts and crafts projects about the stories. Each child receives a book to take home and the books read aloud are donated to the school's library. Reading aloud to children imparts a love of books that leads to improved literacy, to a more successful education, and to a brighter future.
Save the date. ASCE LA YMF is planning to volunteer as a group at RTK’s April reading club on April 14th.
You can begin signing up for the April 14th reading club after March 12th. (you can email Paul so he will send you a reminder email when registration opens.) To sign up to volunteer, please visit www.readingtokids.org where you'll need to register and RSVP. Please sign up for Magnolia Elementary School and select Los Angeles ASCE YMF as your volunteer group affiliation.
