Student Scholarships & Awards

The ASCE Los Angeles Section, Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch (MLAB) and Younger Member Forum (LA YMF) are proud to introduce this year's scholarships and awards for ASCE student members and university chapters.  There are many scholarships available to help offset your ever increasing college tuition.  Below is a summary of each award and a link to each application.

*ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE POST MARKED OR E-MAILED TO THE RESPECTIVE SCHOLARSHIP COORDINATOR BY FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2017 for the First Deadline
APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED THROUGH DECEMBER 29, 2017 ( SECOND DEADLINE), BUT WILL BE DEDUCTED POINTS DURING SCORING OF THE APPLICATION.

Los Angeles Section Scholarships

There are three (3) L.A. Section Scholarships open to all Student Members attending any of the 11 L.A. Section schools (CBU, CSULA, CSUN, LMU, UCLA, USC, CSUF, CSULB, UCI, CPP, and CPSUSLO).  The scholarships are usually between $1500 and $5000. Submit all LA Section applications to This email address is being protected from spambots. Those who complete the LA Section Scholarship application may be qualified for the following:

  1. LEO AND PAT HIRSCHFELDT      (two awards at $1,500 for each winner)
  2. PHILIP ABRAMS                           (one award at $2,000)
  3. JEFFREY GORDON                       (one award at $5,000)

Student Eligibility

  • Applicant must be a National Student Members of ASCE who are also members of the ASCE Student Chapters.
  • Applicant must be a full-time student and enrolled in the following year (2018-2019 school year), except for LA YMF scholarships and the MLAB Patti Gadomski Scholarship.
  • Faculty Advisor must approve and sign application; a maximum of three students per scholarship per university can apply.
  • Applicant must submit a complete application form, essay, and abide by the specific scholarships’ requirements they are applying for.  
  • LA Section Scholarships ONLY – Applicant must be Junior or Senior standing with a graduation date of Spring 2019 to apply.

Los Angeles Section Scholarships will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • 20%    Academic Achievement (provided transcript signed by faculty advisor & strength of GPA)
  • 25%    Growth Within Civil Engineering Profession (active ASCE member, leadership, and personal or other achievements)
  • 45%    Written Essay (Writing Mechanics, clarity in understanding the statement’s function/purpose, and passion for growth as a civil engineer)
  • 10%    Attention to Detail (submitted application on time, follows directions on application)

Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch Scholarships

There are three (3) different scholarships offered by MLAB which are open to Student Members attending any of the 5 MLAB schools (CSULA, CSUN, LMU, UCLA, and USC).

  1. MLAB'S LE VAL LUND MEMORIAL GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP — $1000
    This is a scholarship to recognize and reward those who choose to continue their graduate education at one of the five MLAB universities.

  1. MLAB'S PATTI GADOMSKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP — $1000
    This is a scholarship for students in the pursuit of an engineering degree and who have shown outstanding involvement in the improvement of their community and the quality of life of their neighbors and peers.

  1. METROPOLITAN LOS ANGELES BRANCH SCHOLARSHIP - (2) $2500
    These two scholarships are open to all Student members attending any of the 5 MLAB schools (CSULA, CSUN, LMU, UCLA, and USC).

Student Eligibility: Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch Scholarships

  • Applicant must be a National Student Member of ASCE and also a member of the ASCE Student Chapter.
    • SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP FOR STUDENTS IS FREE AT ASCE.ORG
  • Applicant must be a full-time student and enrolled in the following year.
  • Applicant must submit a complete application form and essay.
  • Applicant must abide by the specific scholarships' requirements for which he or she is applying.

Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch Scholarships will be selected based on the following criteria:

Scholars for the MLAB Scholarship will be selected based on the following criteria*:

  • 35% Academic Achievement (provided transcript signed by faculty advisor & strength of GPA)
  • 15% Growth Within Civil Engineering Profession (active ASCE member, leadership, and personal and other achievements
  • 40% Written Essay
    • Essay: Writing Mechanics, clarity in understanding the statement's function/purpose, and passion for growth as a civil engineer.
  • 10% Attention to Detail (submitted application on time, follows directions on application)

*Patti Gadomski Scholarship ONLY:

Patti Gadomski Scholarship applicants are not required to submit transcripts, resumes or activity lists. Therefore, Patti Gadomski Memorial Scholarship applications will only be subject to criteria C (80%) and D (20%).

Los Angeles Younger Member Forum Scholarships

There are two (2) scholarships offered by LA YMF which are open to Student Members attending any of the 5 MLAB schools (CSULA, CSUN, LMU, UCLA, and USC).  Submit all LA YMF applications to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  

  1. LOS ANGELES YMF GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP
    This is a scholarship to recognize and reward those who choose to continue their graduate education at any of the five MLAB universities.

    This is a scholarship to recognize and reward an outstanding Student Member attending any of the five MLAB universities. Award includes $500 to a Student Member and a year of bragging rights.

  • 30%    Growth Within Civil Engineering Profession (active ASCE member, leadership, and personal or other achievements)
  • 45 - 55%    Written Essay (Writing Mechanics, clarity in understanding the statement’s function/purpose, and passion for growth as a civil engineer)
  • 10%    Attention to Detail (submitted application on time, leadership potential)

There is one (1) scholarship offered by LA YMF which is open to all 11 ASCE Student Chapter schools of the LA Section (CBU, CSULA, CSUN, LMU, UCLA, USC, CSUF, CSULB, UCI, CSPUP, and CPSUSLO).

  1. LOS ANGELES YMF OUTSTANDING STUDENT CHAPTER

This is a scholarship to recognize and reward an outstanding Student Chapter. Award includes $500 to the Student Chapter and a year of bragging rights.

STUDENT NIGHT AND JOB FAIR (FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2018)

Scholarships winners will be recognized at the 2017 Student Night and Job Fair on Friday, February 2, 2018. Make sure to register once you've submitted your application. Join us in Downtown LA for a night of networking, dinner, presentations, and the reveal of the winners of the ASCE scholarships.

Registration will open up in January.
